Project Overview

Redesign the Breville kettle to enhance sustainability while staying true to their design language. Traditional kettles are currently lacking in sustainability, they are recognized as one of the highest-consuming electrical appliances in the kitchen. Coupled with their relatively short lifespan, their sustainability credentials are notably deficient.

Aim

The goal is to design a kettle that transcends the mere function of boiling water. By seamlessly integrating smart features, it aims to transform the mundane task into a novel and engaging experience, all while embracing sustainability. This kettle strives to empower users to make eco-friendly choices effortlessly, without requiring conscious effort, all while maintaining alignment with the Breville brand.

Insights

  • A typical electric kettle in households consumes around 1,200 to 1,500 watts of electricity per boil which is the most out of any other kitchen appliances.

  • A kettle should last 4-5 years on average. This will depend on its quality and maintenance though. but the average person only keeps their kettle for around 3 years due to the kettle going out of style or no longer working as well.

  • When looking into people's behaviours there is a serious opportunity to encourage people to make unconsciousness-sustainable decisions. for example, many people re-boil the kettle as they think it is no longer hot enough. some users will pull the kettle off early or wait till it cools down as it is too hot.

How might we create a more sustainable kettle without affecting the mechanics of the kettle.

03. DESIGN SOLUTION

Heat light indicator- Preventing reboiling

A headlight indicator has been placed on the kettle near the switch to indicate to the user if the kettle is above 85 Degrees.

3 Temperature Setting- Avoiding over boiling when not necessary

There are 3 temperature settings, 80° for delicate white tea, 90° for rich coffee and 100° for black tea.
